Alex Does Life

Ben does life...
Alex does life...

Everyone's doing life these days.

And that's cool.

Workout - 1/30/12

Treadmill - 1.86 mi in 35:00

So-so workout tonight.  I started feeling my right knee after a mile and a half, so I cut it a little bit short.  Since I’m still not working out on a regular basis yet, I don’t want to do too much too soon.

Workout - 1/24/12

Shadowchase Running Club - Track Workout - 3.34 mi in 50:23

Felt great tonight!

12 laps
Lane 8
No stopping
No slowing down
Just one foot in front of the other

Workout - 1/11/12

Boot Camp - 1:06

A lot better tonight than the first night.  This time, I did two things differently, and I think they helped -

1. Kept a close eye on my heart rate.  Rather than just let it shoot up to 170+ like Monday, I lowered the intensity a notch or two once I saw it above 160.  It only got above 170 once, and then only for a few seconds.

2. When getting back up after stretching on the ground, I got up slowly.  I think that’s the reason I got so light-headed last time - getting up way too fast after stretching.

Workout - 1/10/12

Shadowchasers track workout - 3.24 miles in 51:21

Warm-up - 4 laps
Workout - 5 laps
Cool-down - 3 laps

Felt good today. The weather isn’t too cold, which really helps. Not too much else to say, other than I believe that yesterday and today have been my first back-to-back workouts in many months.

Jan 9

Workout - 1/9/12

Boot Camp - 1:02:00

My employer offers a “boot camp” two nights a week, which is mostly cardio with some light weights and stretches.  I’ve tried to do it in the past, but stopped after one or two sessions.  But not this time - I have a half-marathon to train for, and I had no problem getting a solid, hour-long, practically-non-stop, felt-like-I-was-going-to-keel-over-and-die workout in.

Ask me tomorrow how sore I am.  :)

Jan 7

Workout - 1/7/12

Treadmill - 1.90 miles - 35:20

Didn’t want to work out today, but I kept thinking of the half-marathon coming up and how little time I have left to get ready.

Not walking the half-marathon is not an option.

Jan 3

Workout - 1/3/12

ShadowChasers Track Workout - 3.4 miles - 54:50

Back to the track tonight. It wasn’t super cold, but it was cold enough that I had to wear a jacket for most of the workout. I have a sweatshirt and sweat pants, but they were almost too big on me 30 pounds ago - there’s no way they’d still fit.

Sibling peer pressure

Walking - treadmill - 2.17 miles in 40:07

My siblings (my sister and brother who both finished the half-marathon in Las Vegas last month) informed me over the holidays that they’re going to come to Modesto and run the Modesto Half-Marathon in March.  It would look really bad if they came to my town and ran and I just stood on the sidelines and watched.   So, that means I have exactly 76 days to get ready for my first half-marathon…

Note to self: You’re not 20 years old any more

Does two-and-a-half hours of competitive volleyball count as a workout?

Our kid’s school started a volleyball team this year for the 7th grade girls, and my daughter is on the team.  Some of the other parents on the team told us about a volleyball “thing” at one of the local elementary schools tonight.  We weren’t sure if was a clinic, or what, but we decided to check it out.

As it turns out, it was open gym night - they set up two nets - one for the kids (half her team showed up) and one for the grown-ups.  I haven’t played volleyball in probably 20 years, but I wasn’t about to let that stop me - even though I was wearing jean shorts and a casual shirt.  :)

I. had. a. blast.

My wife thought about playing on the adult court - until she saw how serious it was.  It wasn’t college-level play, but it was definitely a step above mere recreational volleyball.  Even though I felt like I was 20 again (minus the vertical leap), I’m not, and I’m sure I will feel this tomorrow.  But it was definitely worth it.  :)

And did I mention that I had a blast?
